LGF has an article describing the latest incident of internecine warfare between the PA and Hamas. One of the great, perennial sources of confusion in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is the widespread lack of understanding that we're dealing with a 3-front war.
The frontline battle between Israel and Arafat/the Palestinian Authority is frequently conveyed in the press. However, while the second skirmish in the rear lines between Israel and Hamas is reported, the public majority hears "Israel vs. Palestine". Part of the reason for this, of course, is that in order for Israel to attack / defend itself against Hamas, it requires going through the PA. I'll freely admit that I'm grossly simplifying many aspects of the conflict here -- for ex., many Israeli's believe that Arafat/the PA have significant influence over Hamas and may actually be encouraging them. Many Palestinians who disapprove of Arafat's leadership do so NOT because he hasn't secured peace but rather because he they believe he is too accommodating towards Israel - in particular (nearly) recognizing Israel's right to exist. There are some Palestinians who are pro-Israeli-existence provided it also entails repatriation. A few in the Israeli govt believe that near-martyrdom for Arafat may actually be what he needs to gain "street cred" with Hamas. And so on, this stuff can be as complex as Cold War wargame scenarios.... The brutality and premeditation in Hamas' tactics against the PA are almost shocking:
Alas, the citizenry comes forward and encourages the 2 sides to make peace with each other by pointing them at the "common" enemy:
Because the 4 dead were killed by Hamas rather than the Israeli's, do ya think Al Jazeera's going to even care about this story? ![]() |
