The Real Threat to Islamo-Fundamentalism

(via instapundit)  Fun article in the Guardian about an anti-Taliban movie being released by Bollywood.

Bollywood has gone one better than Mel Brooks' Nazi parody by making a film about the Taliban, complete with song-and-dance numbers.

...The film is not a burlesque but aims to be a serious exposé. It stars the Hindi actor Manisha Koirala, playing an Indian woman who marries an Afghan Muslim against her family's wishes.

...Indian journalist Prerna Singh Bindra, who writes about cinema for the daily newspaper the Pioneer, said the movie lacked subtlety but dramatised an impor tant subject. "The film is not technically very sound, and this is a very sensitive subject, but it is not very subtle," she said. "The film is very loud - it is made to cater to the Indian audience which likes overdramatisation.

In my blogging youth, I cited another article from Glenn -- Elvis vs. Totalitarianism -- and discussed it in connection with Bollywood.  Many of the same themes are found here again and this is an important element for the "normalization" of a post-islamo-fascist society towards more Western ideas

We have a heroine whose self-actualization is the primary driver of the story.   Her story of rising up against the social mores of her society are carried in a vehicle that's especially targetted towards the hearts and minds of the young.

It's particularly important that these ideas aren't coming from Hollywood but rather from a "non-white" culture that also shares many aesthetic sensibilities with Afghan culture.   Consequently, there is far less political baggage for this little dose of heroism-of-the-individual medication.
