(Via Econlog) Fun article by George Reisman with Fundamental Insights into the Benevolent Nature of Capitalism. His arguments are succinct but I was hoping for bit more of a zing to his words. Capitalism needs a PJ O'Rourke who can turn a phrase in such a bitingly incisive way that it makes carriage in entertainment media irresistable. Ayn Rand does it a bit but in 1000 page tomes. Where's the quasi-entertainer who can do it in 30 second sound bites? Reisman isn't it. But he's sorta close. His arguments focus on things like the inevitable relationship between Freedom, Capitalism and non-violence. Or how the inevitable surpluses created by capitalism benefit even the "losers" in the system (the number one problem for Americans below the poverty line isn't starvation but rather obesity). A non-zero sum game raises all ships. Reisman's arguments, despite his good intentions, are likely to fall on deaf ears for the truly incorrigible anti-capitalists (for ex., Naomi Klein). Klein's angst isn't about the material wealth created by capitalism which benefits our janitors. She's an economic idiotarian and frankly doesn't care about that kind of stuff. Pursuing that line of argumentation will probably just make her mad. For Klein this is about her own perverse morality of power. Her delusional belief system truly believes that the "system" would be better off if the janitor had a much greater role in corporate governance closer to the CEO. "Communism: Been There, Done That" ain't gonna sway her and Reisman won't either. ![]() |
