This is why nearly all tax cuts benefit the rich more than the poor: Even after Bush's tax cut package, the rich still pay a higher % of taxes than they did in previous years - especially compared to those nasty trickle-down Reagan years. When the numbers are stacked this high, you've gotta construct a rather contorted tax cut that returns money to the public but somehow avoids any of it touching the top 40% of the population who are responsible for over 80% of federal tax receipts. Almost by definition, lowering tolls will, on an absolute basis, benefit people who flow through the tollbooth the most. Of course, this doesn't satiate those who don't look at taxes as a means of funding government activity but rather as some sort of punitive attack on the wealthy (I think it's called "social justice" or "social responsibility" or something like that). Of them, I ask "what share of government's expenses should the top 20% pay?" I gaurantee that the majority of folks who haven't seen this chart will voice a number well below 65%. ![]() |
