Sun & Feature Bundling

I've been pretty deliberately staying away from posting articles about Microsoft for a variety of reasons.   Most of all, however, cuz it's just such a pain in the butt to keep up with flak I always assumed it would generate.   Nevertheless, a friend forwarded me this article from NYT positively glowing in it's admiration for Sun Microsystems.

Sun plans to bundle into the Solaris operating system increasing amounts of the software that corporate data centers need as they try to automate more operations and communications with suppliers and with employees. These engine-room software programs - usually sold as separate products, costing up to many thousands of dollars each - include e-mail, calendar software, Web serving, directory management, identity management, multimedia streaming and employee Web portals. For all these extras, Sun may charge a fee for each user, but the idea is to charge far less than other software suppliers.

Just imagine substituting "Microsoft" for "Sun" everywhere in this article....    When Microsoft adds a feature, it's a predatory monopoly encroaching on the little producer.  When Sun adds it, it gets a glowing NYT article.

When Microsoft does NOT add a feature, it's a lazy, innovation-impeding monopoly stealing from the little consumer.  On this as with many other subjects, the Press undoubtedly has its angle.
