Strange Bedfellows

A quick analysis of the Non vote from a biz perspective -

The Left-wing flavour of France's revolt against the EU constitution on Sunday could prove a major headache for business, bringing free-market reform to a halt and forcing Brussels to adopt a more protectionist "Gallic" stance in economic policy.

...He warned that the upset would deter investors at a time when the French economy was already struggling to cope with a sharp downturn and unemployment was rising back above 10 per cent. "We'll have to make twice as much effort. I'll be running 100 metres carrying a 20-kilo bag,'' he said.

...While the French No coalition included "souverainistes" along the lines of Britain's eurosceptics, the movement was bolstered by public sector workers, trade unions, Communist and Socialist grassroots - "La France en bas" - resisting what they see as an Anglo-Saxon takeover of the EU.

Some two thirds of the Socialist base voted no, while the rebellion reached 70 per cent levels in the hard-Left stronghold of Calais.

I have to admit I was a little surprised when I first realized that the real backbone of French opposition to the EU was from the socialist left.   My EU concerns have always been from the the Libertarian right (or as the article terms something in line with "Britain's Eurosceptics").   The fact that I'm rooting with the Reds tells you just how weird and contorted EU politics have become.
