Last week, I had an email exchange with a couple of my rabidly anti-Bush friends about the speculation that Kerry was considering Mccain as either his VP or Secretary of Defense (SOD). My immediate response (sliced & diced from email) -
Now most of my friends can't fathom voting for Bush, think the Iraq campaign is fatally flawed, and consider the Patriot Act step 1 towards Stalinism. Against this backdrop, my issue-by-issue equivocation towards Bush comes across as a raving endorsement so I think they were / are surprised by how seriously I consider voting for Kerry in this very hypothetical conversation. [of course, there are still questions about the extent Kerry would allow Mccain's hawkishness to help form policy.] I can very plainly recognize, for example, that there are some Good Things that result simply from changing White House occupancy to almost anyone but Bush. But then I read this and realize that Kerry wasn't making much of a statement at all. Worse, it pisses me off & makes me feel like I've been taken on a wild, calculated ride -
Sigh (read the whole thing, of course). I fell for it hook, line, and sinker. Kerry's message targetted me like a cruise missile through a window (guided by Reuters). And that makes me even angrier.
My cynicism kicks in and I'm forced to recognize that Kerry identifying 4 candidates at 4 different poles was one of his silly little political games to curry favor with, well everyone. But, even worse, it's a sign that he precisely doesn't have what we need most when dealing with the War on Terror and Iraq - focus, commitment, & a spine.
Now, don't get me wrong, I feel like Bush took me on a ride on issues like medicare and domestic spending, but Iraq and the WoT are perhaps the biggest issues the country's facing. Period. This isn't a place to play strategic bait and switch. I'm reminded once again, that most elections are a choice between the lesser of 2 evils.
