In Praise of Unilateralism

I can't wait to hear the objections that get raised to this one -

UNITED NATIONS (AP) -- The United States vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution Thursday condemning Israel's assassination of Hamas leader Ahmed Yassin.

The veto came after Algeria, the resolution's sponsor, rejected a U.S. demand that the measure also condemn violence by Hamas and other militant groups by name.

The resolution "is silent about the terrorist atrocities committed by Hamas," U.S. Ambassador John Negroponte said before the vote. He called the measure "unbalanced, one-sided."

Hell ya.   How lobsided was this vote?

...The vote was 11 countries in favor, three countries abstaining, and only the United States against.

Thank god for unilateralism.    I'll certainly keep this example handy next time someone argues that a UN mandate is some sort of a gold, glowing, morally-correct halo.

I saw a BBC program on a biz trip a while back where a sneery reporter managed to get an opportunity to ride w/ a bunch of Israeli soldiers engaged in a military maneuver.   IIRC, the operation basically consisted removing some Palestinians protestors from the path of the Wall.   Using techniques similar to cops dealing with protestors here in SF, the Palestinians were physically moved but with no overt physical harm.

Nevertheless, I swear the reporter went out of her way to interview every single Palestinian in the area to get their "unbiased opinion".   Not a single Israeli was interviewed about why the Israeli's felt the wall was necessary in the first place.  But there was no shortage of footage of (jack-booted) soldiers dragging away sobbing Palestinian mothers.   Everything being reported was a fact, no doubt, but absolutely and utterly misleadingly void of context.  The question I wanted to ask the BBC reporter was if she'd ever had a chance to ride along on a Hamas operation?

The same perturbation of the truth found in this crap "unilateral" coverage is being displayed by the illustrious leaders of nations in the UN.  A joke I recently read postulated that the reason animal rights protestors picket stores that sell fur coats rather than leather jackets is because it's far easier to pick on (rich) old ladies than biker gangs.   Similarly, it's so easy to criticize the Israeli's because, by virtue of their ostensible commitment to law and due process, you know that the worst that will happen is some sort of charge of libel or slander.   By contrast, you invite a pretty scary gaze if you criticize Hamas or stand too close to the US or Israel -- a lesson some in Spain have taken to heart (yes, Spain voted for the resolution... as did France.)
