I *really* liked Brian Caplan's summation of Hayek -

The success of science in our society has fostered the belief that society itself can be manipulated to our benefit. We need powerful new arguments to counter this belief; debunking specific proposals will not do. We must explain why using science to solve social problems rarely works and often backfires. Only then will we defeat ‘scientific’ socialism.

While too many Conservatives believe in Intelligent Design when it comes to creation, too many Liberals believe in Intelligent Design for the economy and often, society in general.  The underlying misunderstanding is twofold -

  • Human beings are intrinsically conflicted beasts and any comprehensive linear, top-down model for what makes 'em tick is doomed to fail ;  Freedom works because we all have different paths both individually and in aggregate.
  • Social institutions are fantastically complex and top-down mechanisms for changing them are prone to unintended consequences, hidden costs, and governance failures galore.  The economy is of the same complexity as the ecosystem (hence influential books like Bionomics).  Implicit culture often determines social outcomes far more than explicit law.
