Counter Insurgency 101

This is a fantastic development not so much because of what it says but rather what it says between the lines -

(CNN) -- An audio message purportedly from wanted terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi discovered on the Internet Wednesday ridicules Muslim scholars for not strongly condemning the U.S. occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan, and urges clerics to wake up and help the resistance.

"Instead of implementing God's orders, you chose your safety and preferred your money and sons," said the voice, which could not be independently confirmed as al-Zarqawi's. "You left the mujahedeen facing the strongest power in the world." The message was posted on Islamist Web sites.

"Separate the insurgent from the host population" - I've said it dozens of times on this blog but it bears repeating again.   We can see it in datapoints like this which finally bubble up through thousands of miles and tens of messengers / reporters with their conflicted agendas.   Our reporters may not recognize it directly (or, more sinisterly, choose not to recognize this) but it's of huge strategic significance that Zarqawi feels he's being abandoned by "Good Muslims" in Iraq.   Perhaps it's cuz even though stuff like this doesn't make headlines over here, individual folks in Fallujah, Mosul, Baghdad, etc. find ways to learn about it.
